Devotion Defies Rain: Nanjangud Witnesses a Grand “Dodda Jatre” 2026

Mysuru: The temple town of Nanjangud, famously known as the Dakshina Kashi, transformed into a sea of humanity today, March 30, as lakhs of devotees gathered for the historic Pancha Maha Rathotsava (Dodda Jatre).

Despite a light, auspicious drizzle in the early morning hours, the spirit of the pilgrims remained unshakable. The town echoed with the thunderous and rhythmic chants of “Bandanappa bandanu Nanjundappa Bandanu,” marking another chapter in the centuries-old tradition of Lord Srikanteshwara.

The Grand Procession

The festivities reached their peak during the Brahma Muhurta. At precisely 6:34 AM, following the sacred rituals performed by the chief priests, the massive Gautama Ratha began its journey. Standing nearly 90 feet tall and weighing over 110 tonnes, the chariot’s movement is a sight of sheer power and faith.

The Gautama Ratha was accompanied by four other decorated chariots:

• Ganesha Ratha (leading the way)

• Chandikeshwara Ratha

• Subramanya Ratha

• Parvathi Ratha

Devotees from across Karnataka and neighboring states lined the Ratha Beedi (Chariot Road), offering dhavana, fruits, and flowers as the chariots passed. Many had arrived a day early to take a holy dip in the Kapila River before witnessing the spectacle.

A Unique Musical Tribute: The Administrator’s Pen

While the physical grandeur of the Jatre was visible on the streets, a digital tribute has been touching the hearts of devotees online. Adding a unique cultural layer to this year’s celebrations is a new devotional song titled “ನಂಜನಗೂಡು ನಂಜುಂಡನ ಹಾಡು” (Song of Nanjanagudu Nanjunda).

In a beautiful intersection of administration and art, the lyrics for this soulful track have been penned by Dr. P. Shivaraju (KAS), the Additional District Commissioner (ADC) of Mysuru. It is rare and inspiring to see a high-ranking official, who is often busy with the heavy logistics and security of such massive events, find the creative inspiration to honor the local deity through poetry.

Exclusive Release on Ask Mysuru

We are proud to share that this special tribute was released through the Ask Mysuru YouTube platform. The song captures the spiritual essence of the Jatre and serves as a perfect companion to the festivities.

Dr. Shivaraju’s verses beautifully reflect the deep-rooted connection between the people of the Mysuru region and Lord Srikanteshwara. The video has already garnered significant attention from the local community, serving as a modern bridge to our ancient traditions.

Looking Ahead

While the main Rathotsava concluded this morning, the festive atmosphere in Nanjangud will continue throughout the week with various rituals, including the upcoming Theppotsava (Floating Festival). The District Administration has ensured smooth movement for devotees with additional KSRTC bus services and tight security measures.
